Basement Maintenance: Keep Your Basement in Good Condition

Last week, we talked about how to keep your attic in top shape. This week, we’re going from the top of the house to the bottom–the basement. Maybe you use your basement a little more frequently than your attic–or maybe not–but here are some basement maintenance tips and things to watch for to keep your basement in good condition and prevent problems before they arise.

-Visit the basement: Just like with your attic, take some time regularly to walk around and do a visual inspection. If anything looks out of place or you see moisture or signs of pests, you’ll be able to spot it. If you find signs that pests have been visiting your home, call an exterminator or set some traps to catch them.

-Maintain your HVAC system and sump pump: Make sure your water heater, sump pump, and furnace are in good condition. Check them regularly or have someone perform the maintenance for you.

-Control moisture levels: If your basement feels damp, consider running a dehumidifier. If you see any cracks or gaps in the walls, floor, or foundation, get them sealed immediately. See if you can pinpoint the source of moisture so you can fix it. Additionally, check and clean your vents to make sure air is flowing properly.

-Check your insulation: Are there any drafty areas in your basement? Check to make sure your insulation is in good condition. You may want to add some insulation if there are areas of your basement where there isn’t any.

-Check your windows: Check your basement windows, both inside and out. Inspect the window wells and clear out any debris or leaves that may have fallen, and make sure that there aren’t any areas where pests could enter.

-Clean and declutter: Just like the rest of your home, it’s important to clean your basement regularly. As you clean, take some time to declutter if needed. Reorganize your storage systems and make sure shelving units are up off the floor.
